So here’s day THREE of black in summer! I had no idea I was in such a pervasive mood this week, but hey, it’s something different. I am one of those people who is mostly confused by the maxi skirt. It’s difficult for me to commit to something with so much of one pattern (like so many are), I struggle with the proportion (does it make me look short? Does it make me look tall?) and I also feel like it’s hot! Why should I cover my legs?
Well, this weekend I discovered the secret to wearing maxi skirts in summer, and here it is: lightweight maxi skirts are the perfect sunburn cover-up. I accidentally forgot to apply sunscreen to one part of my lower legs, went to my aunt’s pool, and viola! Weird patchy redness. Did that stop me from learning water aerobics? No. Did it make me not want to wear a leg-baring skirt to a fashion party? Yes. I like this skirt from ModCloth because it’s more Southwestern than floral. Lots of floral fabric on a skirt is always difficult for me to pull off, but black with bright patchwork trim? Easy. I’ve also hiked it up to my natural waist and belted it, which reduces the gypsy frumptastic look some maxi skirts can achieve. I struggle with what color top to wear with this skirt, too. Somehow the neutral green worked because it’s nothing like any of the colors in the trim, but compliments them. So there you have it: a way to wear a maxi skirt in the summer to hide your bad sunbathing decisions! What are your thoughts on the summer maxi skirt?

” gypsy frumptastic look ” made me just bust out laughing at work! what a perfect way to put it.
i’m a fan of the way maxi dresses/skirts look, but i’ve yet to find one that is long enough for my legs. they always end up hitting at a weird place. i have been loving mid-calf skirts this “summer” (western pennsylvania is pretty evil when it comes to hot weather!) though.
that green tank looks perfect on you!

This maxi is great! I love the print at the bottom. I can see this styled so many ways. And, I love the backdrop of your photos. Super cool
Yeah it definitely has a more Southwest feel to it!
I want that skirt!!!

It’s too hot out for black! But your skirt is still purdy, lady.
I think you look quite cool in that southwest-inspired maxi skirt! Such fun colors mixing together in this outfit – particularly at the bottom of your skirt. I, too, have problems with maxi skirts and their whole deal because I’m hardly 5 feet tall. All I need is some pattern overwhelming me and swallowing me whole. So I haven’t tried it yet, but you look really nice today!
Maxi dresses and skirts are summer must haves. I have a few of them in my closet and every year, it is with great joy that I wear them. Maybe we can follow each other?
