What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

Fall Wedding Outfit

This past weekend we had the pleasure of being invited to a wedding out in Kyle, Texas. I’ve recently become friends with Jennifer of If I Must Say So and of Jennifer and Kyle, and was super flattered to be given an invite. But what do you wear to the wedding of a stylish couple you’ve only recently met? A wedding where you’re pretty sure you’ll only know 3-5 people tops?

Fall means darker colors. Even though the bride says “wear whatever you want!” she surely selected fall for her wedding for a reason, right? Let’s go along with her and pretend it really feels like fall. Try to stay away from paler colors in summery shapes (eyelet lace, prints with white backgrounds). If you chose a dress with a summery shape, like mine (sheer fabrics or slinkier cut) make sure the colors are fall-like. Think jewel tones!

If it’s at night, dress it up more. Weddings these days are so confusing. You have to take so many factors into consideration: is it outside? Is it in the evening? Is it in a church? On the beach? But I think it’s safe to say that 6pm weddings are gonna take place mostly in the dark if it’s fall. And darkness implies a little bit dressier, even if the ceremony’s outside. THEREFORE, I went ahead and restrained myself from wearing any over-the-top jewelry and stuck to simple gold accents (seemed classier/dressier). I wore flats, but the flats are the dressiest I own, and only appear on the most special of occasions.

Bring a warm layer. This is an obvious one to most, but difficult to figure out at the last moment! I have scrapped entire outfits because they didn’t look right with my cardigan/jacket/blazer. It’s best to think about this part a few days before the event if you know which dress you’ll wear. At the very least have some wide wraps on hand in various colors.

These are just a few small tidbits to aid in your fall wedding attire selection! I have dressed many ladies for many weddings at all sorts of different locations, so please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need any tips for your own events. My Special Occasion Service is perfect for those of you who need someone to help decide which shoe/wrap/necklace/cardigan looks best with this dress (and should I even wear this dress)??? I will talk to you about the event, where it will take place, do all the research (and shopping) involved in finding an appropriate look suited to your personality and to the event. All that and you get to have MORE FUN at the event because you wont be worrying about whether or not you look right! Because you will!
