I’m just going to go ahead and say it. I turn 32 in a few weeks. I don’t feel weird about it at all, because I like being over 30 so far, but I do feel a little old by style blog standards. For instance, there’s no question that a girl in her 20’s can wear a short skirt or thigh-grazing shorts and no one judges the age-appropriateness of the outfit. When shorts came back with a vengeance, I had these adorable plaid ones with sailor buttons on them, and they’ve been sort of languishing in my closet for the past couple of years. I can’t say that my body has changed a whole bunch since then (besides the unwelcome addition of more spider veins), but I just don’t feel that comfortable showing so much leg for some reason. I think in order for me to show a lot of leg nowadays, the outfit has to have the right balance and fit.
Take this outfit here. I am wearing pretty short shorts. But, unlike my little plaid ones, they are loose, and fall away from my leg, which makes a huge difference. With skirts or shorts, I think the more flounce, the shorter I can go and remain comfortable. I am also balancing out all the leg skin by hiding a little arm skin. Okay, and I might be verging on boyish here, so I added the necklace. In general, I think the shapes that flatter the figure will apply to shorts and skirts. If you look good in an a-line shaped skirt, a pair of shorts that float out from your hips will also flatter your figure, no matter what your age. I also think that if you look good in pencil skirts, some slim-cut walking shorts will flatter your figure too. I don’t like rules like “no miniskirts after 30” because I don’t think they apply to everyone, and in Texas, we would all die of heatstroke if we felt like we HAD to cover ourselves up all the time. I just go for whether I feel embarrassed to leave the house or not.
