Wearing Shorts Over 30

Wearing Shorts Over 30

I’m just going to go ahead and say it. I turn 32 in a few weeks. I don’t feel weird about it at all, because I like being over 30 so far, but I do feel a little old by style blog standards. For instance, there’s no question that a girl in her 20’s can wear a short skirt or thigh-grazing shorts and no one judges the age-appropriateness of the outfit. When shorts came back with a vengeance, I had these adorable plaid ones with sailor buttons on them, and they’ve been sort of languishing in my closet for the past couple of years. I can’t say that my body has changed a whole bunch since then (besides the unwelcome addition of more spider veins), but I just don’t feel that comfortable showing so much leg for some reason. I think in order for me to show a lot of leg nowadays, the outfit has to have the right balance and fit.

Take this outfit here. I am wearing pretty short shorts. But, unlike my little plaid ones, they are loose, and fall away from my leg, which makes a huge difference. With skirts or shorts, I think the more flounce, the shorter I can go and remain comfortable. I am also balancing out all the leg skin by hiding a little arm skin. Okay, and I might be verging on boyish here, so I added the necklace. In general, I think the shapes that flatter the figure will apply to shorts and skirts. If you look good in an a-line shaped skirt, a pair of shorts that float out from your hips will also flatter your figure, no matter what your age. I also think that if you look good in pencil skirts, some slim-cut walking shorts will flatter your figure too. I don’t like rules like “no miniskirts after 30” because I don’t think they apply to everyone, and in Texas, we would all die of heatstroke if we felt like we HAD to cover ourselves up all the time. I just go for whether I feel embarrassed to leave the house or not.

Shorts and I had been at odds for years, even when i was still in my teens. It wasn’t until recently when I started to find more shorts being cut looser in the thighs that my relationship with them became renewed. Flouncier cuts are truly key to looking good in shorts when you arent comfortable showing as much skin.

and you can totally pull of any shorts with your amazing legs!

  2. Cute! I def think it’s about how you feel, and not your age.

  3. I’m turning 30 in October, and I’m having serious wardrobe issues. I don’t want to be that 30 year old that dresses too young! I totally agree about what you said in your post- you just need to balance. More leg means less arm/chest for me. Plus, it helps to have shorts or a shirt that are not skintight if they are short. You are brilliant!!

i have a shorts aversion in general, but i have no problems in shorter skirts in the summertime! i’m 26, so not quite 30s, but close enough!

    plus, your legs? amazing!

  5. These look great on you! [Glad to hear I’m not the only one cursed with spider veins — they make me want to cover up ALL THE TIME. Sigh.]

    • I know, I used to think it was all anyone saw when my legs were exposed, but the heat has just made me not care. Perhaps I will do an investigative report on getting rid of them or something. I just use fake tanner to create less contrast. I have a feeling the methods of removal are painful and anxiety-provoking. I mean, I can’t even deal with acupuncture!

  6. You look great in those shorts. I think you are totally on point when it comes to wearing shorts at certain lengths. The fuller the leg the better! At least where my tights are concerned..hehe..

  7. Ugh…I mean thighs..not tights!

You just spoke my heart! I might not have the best legs, but cannot cover up in Texas … Plus knowing there are rules I just feel like breaking them even more! 😛

I can only hope my legs will look like yours when I am 30. Break the rules, this outfit looks awesome on you! xo

  11. I really like that post ! Its nice and honest I know exactly what you mean. I am 34 and I feel the same away about getting into little shorts ! I am not as confident as I used to be about wearing them and prefer things a little longer now.

    Awesome shorts :)

I get worried about age appropriate (a ripe old 28 going on 29 – and don’t laugh because you’re in the same boat if you’re thinking about it at a piddly 32 ;)) but really I am thinking “sod it. I shall grow old disgracefully” Although hopefully not like my secondary school geography teacher..

    dear laurel-
please, at age of 32, wear as conceivably tight & short of everything you even think of. flaunt it!! i am lately thinking that every opp’ty in the past that i used to dress near-naked, borderline-inappropriate, & felt remotely confident, i now relish even though purely as memory & perhaps never-to-be-repeated, as my body ahem changes.
    love, elizabeth
