Oh, floral leggings, why do you haunt me so? Why do you look so pretty hanging there every day, unworn, like an impressionistic painting you can’t decide where to place on the wall? These leggings have plagued me with unwearability since I purchased them a few months ago in a brief binge at the then newly opened H&M. What color besides black looks okay on top? How much leg is too much leg? What if they look weird in the butt?
I’ve got the answers, folks. Here are a few tips to pulling off leggings-as-pants:
- Go for a forgiving small, all-over print in a darker color. These leggings are good because they don’t show off every dimple underneath em (the print distracts), and they have the right structure-to-movement ratio going on in the synthetic fabric. They wrinkle a little, are tight, but don’t feel like tights so much as pants.
- Choose very basic colors to pair with them. It would be really easy to look matchy-matchy while wearing these babies, that’s why I went for a fairly neutral top and shoe. Let the print shine!
- Choose the right length top. Personally, covering my booty and crotch is paramount to my comfort while wearing anything legging-like. Without a zipper or back pockets, I just feel way too exposed. The perfect length for a tunic-style top is usually one that falls to about the widest part of your hips.
- When in doubt, pretend they’re tights! The first time I wore these, I did so with a black t-shirt dress. You still can enjoy the print without worrying about your butt showing.
Hopefully these tips help, and you too can enjoy the silly fun and ridiculous comfort of wearing stretchy pants in public!
