Fall’s slowly creeping back, and it’s time to start layering again! Don’t think you have to buy a whole new wardrobe or anything, just a few pieces that will work over your darker-colored summer dresses will do for this kind of look. Throwing a sweater over your dress will immediately take the formality down a notch, so the right combo can go from day to night if you want it to.
- Select a sweater that comfortably fits over your dress–the thicker, more textured weaves are more forgiving over dresses that might have pockets or buttons on the front.
- Align the neckline with that of the dress. If there’s a collar on your dress, that’s easy, but if you have a lower neckline, just make sure your sweater covers it completely.
- Play with proportion. If you like the boxy kind of 90’s look (like I do here) go for a slightly boxy sweater and don’t worry about your waist showing. If you’d like a little more flattering proportion, get a sweater that hits you at your natural waist (or where the waist of the dress is).
Not too hard, right?
