When to Invest: The Grown-Up Blazer

There comes a time when a grown-up lady needs to invest in grown-up lady clothes, and I’m starting to do this slowly, over the course of the fall, with my trusty Discover card and crossed fingers. I’ve spoken from time to time about investment pieces throughout this blog’s history, but I’ve reached a point in my career that it’s becoming more important to select these higher-quality pieces carefully, since I need to be wearing them much more often.

There are a few pieces I always recommend each of my clients invest a little more of their budgets towards right from the start, but this week I am going to discuss THE BLAZER.

Here’s why a sharp blazer is paramount to your feeling successful, especially if you’re a small business owner like me, someone who has to interact with potential customers, or anyone who wants to appear a little more put-together in general.

  • Blazers add structure, easliy. They will elevate even jeans and a t-shirt (see these outfit photos for example) and give off a chic, thoughtful vibe that shows you care about your look. There’s nothing easier to throw or anything that impacts your overall look more than a blazer does.
  • They emanate confidence.  Blazers have powerful vibes.  I mean, think about the kinds of people who made them famous–business men, 80’s working gals in power suits, professors in tweed.  There’s a really good chance you’ll feel more confident in a blazer.
  • There’s a blazer for everyone.  Who doesn’t want to feel a little more fearless, or be able to walk into a room and own it without worrying they aren’t looking the part?  Blazers come in all sorts of shapes, colors, and fabrics and can fit into any wardrobe, no matter what your style or budget.
  • Bonus: thrifted blazers are super easy to tailor (just make sure they fit you in the shoulder)

I’m going to be styling my new blazer all over the place this fall, mark my words! I happened to find one that fits my personality and business vibe, and I can help you find yours too. I’m now offering free 20-minute phone or skype consults to anyone who wants to take their style to the next level, with no commitment, just a chat to see if any of my services are right for you. I’ll also be talking blazers on my upcoming Style Tipsheet, so sign up here to get yours straight to your inbox.

One Response to When to Invest: The Grown-Up Blazer

Blazers are definitely great staple pieces. I finally bought one that fit me correctly (or not oversized) last week. The ones I’ve thrifted are always way too big for me, especially for a professional setting. I really like the one you’re wearing here!
