How to Make Shapeless Work

swingy mod

There are few things I love more than a short mod-shaped dress. This weekend required a little retail therapy, and I didn’t even have to try this baby on to know it was going to become a new favorite. The collar, the pleats? Please. But how do you wear this kind of dress without feeling like you are wearing a sack (cuz you basically are)?

Length: Boxy dresses should be as short as possible. The legs will be the key players here, and when I say legs, I also mean shoes. Wear those heels, ladies, and don’t think twice about wearing the crazy-high ones either.

Bust: Ideally, the dress should skim the bust just sort of to show it exists. This can be done by unbuttoning the buttons like I have here.

Layering/Belts: A fitted cardigan will immediately give shape to a boxy dress, as will a belt. I’ll be wearing this little number with both of these items soon. MARK MY WORDS. Just not when it’s 100 degrees out.

  1. Oooh I like it! Usually I have the most luck with shapeless if it is an a-line style and very fitted at the bust. And personally, I can’t do pleats in fear of looking like a blob but you look fantastic in this dress!

that dress is just darling – and I agree, belts are a must for shapeless dresses. Sometimes i can be quite nice to actually just have a sack – then you can choose where to create the waist, if you want it high or low or blousey… so much more freedom!

Great ideas on how to wear a boxy dress. I usually go with the belt route, but I like the idea of going sans belt when it’s ten billion degrees outside!
