Dress as Midi-Length Skirt

Dress as Midi Skirt

As you loyal readers may recall, this is the dress I received in a swap some months back. I loved the print and knew it had potential despite it’s wonky fit (I styled it here and here in it’s dress incarnation). But what is wonkiness aside from a challenge? Today I have taken this challenge and turned it into a skirt! All it took was a safety pin, some odd body contortions, a little fold of the arm straps, and viola! I have made myself a trendy little number and hidden the dress evidence with a belt.

You might be able to do this too! Elastic tops make it easier, of course, but as long as the dress is basically all one width (waist-less) it’s worth a try. I am really not sure why this piece was ever a dress in the first place. Isn’t it MUCH better as a skirt??

These aren’t the only tricks I have up my sleeve, people. When I start out with a client, I have her make a “don’t know how to wear this” pile, and we try these crazy tricks out. Nothing is better to me than making three different outfits out of stuff you think is hopeless. Well, almost nothing.

You’re amazing. I would have never thought that was a dress. I think it should always be a skirt. But I also like how you belt it as a dress in one of your previous posts. Either way – the print is stellar.

Definitely much, much better as a skirt! I love the layering with the other pleated skirt. Wish you could come work your magic in Sydney! I have a beautiful rust-colored silk pleated skirt that I thrifted but I can’t manage to style it :(.

i really like this dress as a skirt. the colors are fantastic.
question: have you done this trick with a short dress? i have several dresses that are either way too short or have wonky straps that i’d love to try this out on.

I love it when people wear dresses as skirts, and I think yours looks great! I would think the lines in the skirt–as a dress, on some people–would give some body types a weird shape. But as a skirt, I think it would look great on all types. And the belt makes it look like it was meant to be! Take care.
