Another Foray into Mom-Jeans Territory

High-Waisted 70's-Inspired Jeans

Three years ago, if you had shown me these jeans I would have scoffed at the idea of wearing them in public. Now look at me. It’s funny how perspective changes. I think it’s a combination of exposure to all sorts of insane outfits through reading style blogs and magazines non-stop, plus the experimenting I have done this year to discover what cuts flatter my frame best. Although I do still wear clothes I find more interesting than flattering from time to time, and these high-waisted pants are more acceptable trend-wise nowadays, I still don’t think I would have worn these had it not been for blogging and reading others’ blogs. I think there’s also a little bit of me liking stuff other people think is ugly, too. And humor. I think mom jeans are funny. Ugly or not, it’s the truth. I wore this. All day.

My friend Rachel from Maine sent me this awesome necklace she made, and I think it was the element that tied the outfit together. You can find her stuff at Kouklamou Designs, and she’s got lots more where this necklace came from!

Amazing necklace and earrings – perfect for the outfit :) hehe I never thought of high waisted as “Mom” jeans. They were always my favourite kind but sort of hard to come by at times. They all seem to be super low waisted when I go looking.

I have to say, I’m a huuuuuge fan of the “mom jean,” it’s way sexier than the low-rise jeans that define my generation! Also, that top is to die for.

this will be the summer of mom capris, mom jeans, mom shorts! i also love the way your j brand skinnies look in the previous post – they are the perfect color. do you know the model name perhaps??

    • Thanks! We’re gonna mom-pants it up this summer for sure! The j brands are called the Maria and totally worth the expense if you’ve been searching forever for the perfect high waist skinny like I had been. They are also the perfect cropped length!

I definitely agree, personal styling blogging has exposed us to such craziness! I often feel like I’m wearing a boring outfit for the “blogosphere” but then I step out into everyday life and people give me weird looks. It is kinda awesome. I love mom jeans and they compliment your figure so well!

there is nothing mom like about these jeans, laurel! and i know what you mean….there are SO many new styles and things ive tried out, thanks to blogging! hooray for taking chances :)

  10. annebeth says:

these aren’t mom jeans, these are awesome seventies jeans! you look great!

about the pony tail idea: I’m not the biggest fan of a pony tail with my style, it’s so… I don’t know, unoriginal? :(

  11. michelle says:

I love your posts because you always look so happy!

I think the jeans + cute sweater top + bright accessories totally work! I agree, my style has evolved so much since I started blogging and even today I took outfit pictures for PSS Blogger’s Do It Better Challenge and I thought to myself- ‘I can’t believe I’m wearing this outfit!’ Haha, I love it! 😀

  13. Mitzi says:

Those jeans look great on you! Love the styling with the red necklace, yellow belt, turquoise earrings and striped flats. Such great colour contrast against the soft grey top and classic jeans!
And thanks for missing me during my little hiatus 😉 I missed you too!

I think calling high waisted jeans ‘mom jeans’ is a bit incorrect. There are a few other factors that make a huge difference. Mom jeans have elastic waistbands. Mom jeans are never in a dark wash. and Mom jeans are tapered and almost always cut just too short, so you can see a bit of tube sock in between the hem and the white sneakers.

Because your jeans are stylish, and anyone currently buying mom jeans wouldn’t touch those with a 10 foot pole.

I will say that the blog has altered my own style quite a bit, and often find myself trying out things I never thought I would because of how much I like it on others. Like horizontal stripes. I did not own a single item with them prior to the blog because I was afraid of looking wide(r) and short(er).

I feel so guilty. I haven’t been visiting your blog the way I do when you were still n blogger but I do love your new site. It’s more personalized and I feel the same with mom jeans. Hahahaha! I despise those like the ugg boots but they’re in fashion.

I don’t know if I’d try the trend but you look awesome in them. Seriously, you do. The necklace is so cute too. I’d love if my friends make one for me. Haha! :)

  16. Montambo says:

Mom jeans are baggy on top and have pleats. Your jeans are right out of That 70s Show–but for 2011. You look awesome!

Thinking about That 70s Show makes me wish I had thick, long red hair. I’ve always have this wish. Remember in the later years of That 70s Show when the red-haired chick bleached her hair blond? GUH-ross!

  17. bravegrrl says:

super cute flats! perfect for spring!

  18. Sarah says:

I didn’t get the mom jeans vibe. You just look downright adorable. I think you’re channeling the 70s way more than a mom, anyway.

  19. Grace says:

you are one of the few people I know who can pull off haircuts like that!!
    cute outfit :)

I’m a new follower, please follow me back? :)

Those jeans looks great on you!
No shame in high waisted anything.
I think at a certain point in life – all of our guts need the additional support.

  21. Those jeans fit you amazingly!! They look great on you. I really like this outfit, definitely something I would wear. I like the little bits of color from your belt & necklace, it’s really nice. :)

  22. I don’t think these look like mom jeans — just a little higher waisted than the norm these days. :)

  23. Rachel says:

Thanks for including my necklace in your outfit! :) I like the turquoise earrings, too.

  24. kelsey says:

I love this outfit. Great neutral basics and awesome, colorful accessories!

  25. softspoken says:

i love those jeans! also your necklace is super cute. and i agree – if it weren’t for fashion sites and fashion blogging and street style snapshots i’d probably never have developed my style as much as i have over the years!
